Brain Boost: Power Foods to Keep at Your Desk

The Struggle is Real

You’re staring at your computer, trying to focus on finalizing the last minute touches on the presentation that you’ll be giving in front of the entire company in about 20 minutes. The pressure is on as the minutes tick by. Then, out of nowhere, your stomach starts to growl so loudly that your co-worker gives you a quick glance. As you try to fight through it, the growls get louder and you can almost feel your blood sugar lowering, causing a weakness in your brain power. Although you try to ignore the hunger pangs, finally, your hunger takes control. Not only can you not focus, but you’re lacking the brain power that you need to complete this presentation. With only 15 minutes to spare, you realize you do not have enough time to run to the café down the street. What will you do?

It happens to the best of us. Whether it’s when we first walk into a grocery store or in the middle of exercising, hunger can strike at the most inconvenient times. Thankfully, we have some survival tips for you! Today I am happy to share with you how I fight back when hunger strikes at work.

Here I’ll break down some healthy snack options that are very easy to prepare and can help fight last minute hunger. Read on to gain a brain boost with these power foods to keep at your desk.

Power Foods to Boost Your Brain

  • Walnuts

Keeping walnuts at your desk can help fight those stressful moments that may occur unexpectedly at work. Walnuts have been proven to reduce stress levels and also lower bad cholesterol. How happy would you be if, when counting down the minutes before your presentation, you could reach for a handful of walnuts to power through?

  • Blueberries

We all love sugar, but as we know, the sugar in a candy bar is no good! Having a handful of natural sugar will help raise the bar in your thinking. Blueberries can naturally spike your energy level, and have even been linked to improving short-term memory.

  • Avocado

We all need fats to fuel our body throughout the day, but don’t let this fact trick you into eating a frosted donut. Your body needs good fats in order to keep you critical thinking game strong! Avocados are loaded with nutrients, making it a great, healthy choice.

  • Peanut Butter

Our body processes peanut butter in a similar way as the avocado because it’s another healthy source of fat. Plus, it’s a great sweet treat. Although peanut butter does taste good, you can go overboard! My suggestion would be to have no more than a spoonfull over a slice of bread. One spoonful has the ingredients to keep you fueled throughout the entire day.

  • Dark Chocolate

Dark Chocolate Yes, I said it, chocolate. But, only dark chocolate can do the magic. Dark chocolate is filled with antioxidant-rich cacao, which is a perfect pick-me-up for a fatigued brain. It also has a hint of caffeine, adding an extra oomph to your wake-up call!

  • Oatmeal

Although most people only see oatmeal as a breakfast food, it can be just as good any time of the day. Oatmeal is a good source of healthy carbohydrates, which break down more slowly than other types of food, boosting your brain power for several hours. Get creative and add some blueberries to really boost your brain power!

I hope you found these food options to be helpful, and are considering adding them into your diet. Goal setting is important for being successful, and this is the perfect time to set one for yourself. Consider bringing at least one of these snack options with you to work this week. You might even start a new office trend as your co-workers catch on to the natural ways you have boosted your brain power.
