3 Medical advancements in 2017

Yes, it’s officially 2017. Time is flying by, but thankfully in the medical world, every second is being used wisely. Every year, doctors and scientists accomplish remarkable breakthroughs. Who would have thought that 20 years ago we find a way to prevent chicken pox? We continue to become more knowledgeable in the field of medicine, and here are 3 medical advancements expected in 2017.

Augmented Reality

 Medical advancements in 2017

Remember the game Poke-mon go? Most Americans experienced augmented reality for the first time after playing this game. If you are not familiar, augmented reality is the process of computers digitally enhancing sights and sounds of real-life environments.

How does that connect to a medical advancement? This new found computer technology is actively discussed as being a powerful tool to change the way doctors perform surgery. Currently, surgeons rely on microscope ocular systems or other camera systems to operate. Unfortunately, this forces them to keep their heads down and limits their peripheral vison. Thankfully, augmented reality allows surgeons to be immersed in a high-resolution, 3-D representation of the body part they are working on. Now, they can lift their heads and look at the body part’s 3-D representation in front of them, so they can better understand what next steps need to be taken during surgery. In addition, this tool also can use data to generate visual templates for surgeons to execute certain tasks.

The augmented reality tool has already been tested. Surgeons have found that this new technology adds a sense of comfort and visual information to help them operate more efficiently and safely.

Diabetes drugs that reduce cardiovascular disease and death

The correlation between diabetes and cardiovascular disease was discovered years ago. It has been found that about half of the people with type 2 diabetes passed away from complications of heart disease. In 2016, two new medications began reducing mortality rates considerably. The two medication that contribute to this are called empagliflozin and liraglutide. Empagliflozin modifies the progression of heart disease by working with the kidneys, while liraglutide is known for having a comprehensive effect on the heart. With this knowledge, in 2017, we hope to create new medications for those with diabetes as well as a new line of research into targeting type 2 diabetes and its comorbidities.

Regenerative Medicine

 Medical advancements in 2017

Who would have guessed that in the 20thcentury we could extract a human’s stem cells, regenerate them and put them back in their own body to fight diseases naturally? The wave of research for regenerative medicine is advancing as we are discovering the possibilities it has on fighting diseases.

Currently, regenerative medicine is being used to treat multiple sclerosis, avascular necrosis, lung disease and other types of diseases. In fact, the Lung Institute plays a big role in treating diseases through regenerative medicine. Currently, they have performed over 3659 successful treatments for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis.

The field of regenerative medicine has gone as far as creating organs out of stem cell extractions. The future of stem cell therapy, regenerative medicine and its discoveries is limitless, and in 2017, we could see significant progression.
