Many people are putting in extra hours at work or using their phones and emails to be on call when they’re away from work. With so many ways to stay in contact with work and engaged in work tasks, finding balance in theirs can become challenging. Studies show that a poor work and life balance can result in unhealthy levels of stress, unhappiness and even reduced productivity. Here are some ways to achieve a healthy work and life balance.

Set Your Priorities

Staying organized and knowing what you have to do during the work day will help you prioritize what needs your attention and how long a given task could take to complete. With this information established, you’ll be able to set aside time to tackle each item. When you’re able to make a plan and stick to it at work, you’ll be able to tackle last minute tasks better because you’ll know where you can fit them into your schedule. If you’re very busy and feel like you can’t fit something else into your schedule, it is okay to say “no.” Communication is essential.

Be mindful of the amount of time you spend on activities that sap your time and energy. Limit the time you spend on social media sites, surfing the internet or doing other activities that can quickly take up more time than intended.

Schedule Something to Look Forward to Each Day

By setting aside time daily for something you look forward to, you might find it easier to prioritize your tasks and work more efficiently. When you have something to look forward to, you could find that you have a little bit more energy to help you complete tasks. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as you check things off your list and get closer to your goal.

Your activity doesn’t have to be time consuming, complicated or expensive. It just has to be something you enjoy. Schedule time to read a book, go to dinner with a friend, take a walk, visit an art museum, play a sport, listen to music, enjoy a massage or even just have quiet time.

Practice Healthy Habits

When you’re busy at work and busy at home, practicing healthy habits can be challenging. Eating a balanced, healthy diet as well as staying hydrated with water can help you feel better every day. Sleep is another essential component to a balanced life. When you get adequate amounts of sleep, your mood and immune system will be better, you’ll have a better memory and experience clearer thinking. Exercising is another healthy habit that can improve your work and life balance. When you schedule time to exercise and do your favorite activities, you’ll feel satisfied and able to enjoy both going to work and personal time activities. Of course, some relaxation techniques like yoga, Tai Chi, writing in a journal and deep breathing, are great ways to bring the calm into your daily life.
