Types of Poker

In a typical poker game, the highest hand wins the pot. Some variations may award the pot to the lowest hand instead. For example, a straight flush is not considered a high hand in some games. And some games may not count any straight or flushes at all. In these cases, the winnings are split between the highest and lowest hands. Here are some examples of different types of poker games. Let’s begin with lowball.

In a pot-limit poker game, each player has the right to raise or bet an amount equal to the pot. To do this, a player must first put in the chips necessary to call the previous bet and then raise the amount equal to the number of chips in the pot. Often, pot-limit games put a cap on raises and bets, so players are encouraged to bet no more than what is in the pot.

Different forms of poker require different strategies. In most cases, players bet a small amount of money, called an “ante,” before the hand is dealt to them. This amount of money adds value to the pot and gives each player a chance to win. When the game goes into a multi-stage re-deal, players may use a three-card brag. This gentleman’s game was popular in the U.S. during the Revolutionary War, and is still widely played today in the U.K.
