The Basics of Poker

Poker

Several variations of Poker are played with different amounts of cards. There are also different number of players. For the maximum number of players, six to eight players are ideal. The aim of the game is to win the “pot,” the total amount of money bet by all the players in a single deal. A hand can be won by having the highest poker hand or by making a bet that no other player calls. The higher the hand, the better the player’s chance to win the pot.

There are many theories about the origin of the game. Some believe it began in Persia, but the earliest version of poker was probably played in Europe. The word “poker” is derived from the 17th century French game poque, which developed alongside the German game pochen and the Spanish primero. Later, it spread throughout the European continent and made its way to the United States via French settlers. This game has been called the national card game of the United States.

In a standard game of poker, each player receives a certain amount of chips. White chips are the lowest value, valued at five cents, while red, blue, and green chips are worth ten, twenty, and thirty cents, respectively. In a game with more than seven players, every player “buys in” to a hand. The amount of cash players buy in to a game is usually equal to the amount of chips they are using.
