Various technologies are used for this purpose, including video cameras and computer systems to monitor game results. For example, a system called “chip tracking” links betting chips with built-in microcircuitry to enable the casino to monitor the exact amounts wagered minute by minute and be alerted to any deviation from expected results.

Many casinos have comp programs for regular patrons that resemble airline frequent-flyer programs and reward them with free or discounted meals, drinks, hotel rooms and show tickets. This helps the casino build a database of players and track trends in their behavior. In addition, casinos analyze their games to determine the mathematical expectancy of a player and their variance, or how much of an upswing or downswing they are likely to experience. This information is compiled by mathematicians and computer programmers known as gaming mathematicians or analysts.
